The 171 godan verbs that end in す. A godan verb moves its final kana along that kana's vowel row: さ before ない (話さない), し before ます (話します), せ for the potential and ば forms (話せる, 話せば), そ for the volitional (話そう). Its て and た forms are 話して and 話した. す is the only ending whose て form adds no sound change.
