放す (はなす, hanasu) — to release — is a godan verb ending in す: 放して (te-form), 放した (past), 放さない (negative), 放します (polite).

It is transitive: it takes a direct object. It also means to let go; to free.

How 放す conjugates · godan す-verb

Only the last kana changes: す becomes さ, し, せ or そ.

Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.
