襲う (おそう, osou) — to attack — is a godan verb ending in う: 襲って (te-form), 襲った (past), 襲わない (negative), 襲います (polite).

It is transitive: it takes a direct object. It also means to assail; to make an assault.

Only the last kana changes: う becomes わ, い, え or お.

Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.
