驚くおどろく

odoroku

to be surprised · N4

驚く (おどろく, odoroku) — to be surprised — is a godan verb ending in く: 驚いて (te-form), 驚いた (past), 驚かない (negative), 驚きます (polite).

It also means to be taken aback; to be amazed.

How 驚く conjugates · godan く-verb

Only the last kana changes: く becomes か, き, け or こ.

Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.
