居る (いる, iru) — to be — is an ichidan verb: いて (te-form), いた (past), いない (negative), います (polite).

It is usually written in kana: いる rather than 居る. It also means to exist.

How いる conjugates · ichidan verb

Drop the る, then add the ending.

Nothing else moves: every ending attaches straight to the stem い. That is what makes ichidan the easy class.

No sound changes and no vowel rows. The catch is telling ichidan from godan: plenty of godan verbs end in る too.
