Godan verb (る)

要るいる

iru

to be needed · N5

Also read いる: 入る (enter), 居る (be), 炒る (roast). All 4 words

要る (いる, iru) — to be needed — is a godan verb ending in る: いって (te-form), いった (past), いらない (negative), いります (polite).

It is usually written in kana: いる rather than 要る. It also means to be necessary; to be required.

How いる conjugates · godan る-verb

Only the last kana changes: る becomes ら, り, れ or ろ.

Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.

The て and た forms are the only two that don't follow this pattern. Every う-, つ- and る-verb has the same って there.
