Godan verb (う)

仕舞うしまう

shimau

to put away · N1

仕舞う (しまう, shimau) — to put away — is a godan verb ending in う: しまって (te-form), しまった (past), しまわない (negative), しまいます (polite).

It is transitive: it takes a direct object. It is usually written in kana: しまう rather than 仕舞う. It also means to tidy up; to finish.

How しまう conjugates · godan う-verb

Only the last kana changes: う becomes わ, い, え or お.

Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.
