追う (おう, ou) — to chase — is a godan verb ending in う: 追って (te-form), 追った (past), 追わない (negative), 追います (polite).

It is transitive: it takes a direct object. It also means to run after; to pursue.

How 追う conjugates · godan う-verb

Only the last kana changes: う becomes わ, い, え or お.

Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.
