How 撫でる conjugates · ichidan verb

Drop the る, then add the ending.

Nothing else moves: every ending attaches straight to the stem 撫で. That is what makes ichidan the easy class.

撫でる dropsstem + ending
撫でない撫でないnegative · I don't stroke it. 撫でます撫でますpolite present 撫でて撫でてte-form · I stroke it and … 撫でた撫でたpast · I stroked it. 撫でられる撫でられるpotential · I can stroke it. 撫でれば撫でればif · If I stroke it, ... 撫でよう撫でようvolitional · Let's stroke it.

No sound changes and no vowel rows. The catch is telling ichidan from godan: plenty of godan verbs end in る too.
