打つ (うつ, utsu) — to hit — is a godan verb ending in つ: 打って (te-form), 打った (past), 打たない (negative), 打ちます (polite).

It is transitive: it takes a direct object. It also means to strike; to knock.

How 打つ conjugates · godan つ-verb

Only the last kana changes: つ becomes た, ち, て or と.

Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.
