Godan verb (る)
労るいたわる
itawaru労る (いたわる, itawaru) — to pity — is a godan verb ending in る: いたわって (te-form), いたわった (past), いたわらない (negative), いたわります (polite).
It is transitive: it takes a direct object. It is usually written in kana: いたわる rather than 労る. It also means to sympathize with; to sympathise with.

Only the last kana changes: る becomes ら, り, れ or ろ.
Which one depends on the ending. The five are one line of the hiragana chart — same consonant, vowels あ・い・う・え・お — and everything before that kana never changes.
