Ichidan verb
留めるとどめる
todomeru留める (とどめる, todomeru) — to stop — is an ichidan verb: 留めて (te-form), 留めた (past), 留めない (negative), 留めます (polite).
It is transitive: it takes a direct object. It also means to stay; to cease.

Drop the る, then add the ending.
Nothing else moves: every ending attaches straight to the stem 留め. That is what makes ichidan the easy class.

No sound changes and no vowel rows. The catch is telling ichidan from godan: plenty of godan verbs end in る too.
